Body Copy Artist interview/ Q&A:

The indie rock genre is a branch of alternative rock that originally started in the United States and the United Kingdom in the 1980s.
However, today in the North London region the genre has been booming louder than ever, with new and upcoming talent rising up left right and centre.
Today we have with us the new and brilliant indie rock group, “SKRAM”, to discuss their experiences with the North London music scene and much more.

Who are you guys, and how did you start playing music together?

Dan:Well that’s pretty easy to answer because we are in fact brothers.
John:Yeah, and we all knew pretty early on, that playing music is exactly what we were all supposed to be doing, our parents are also both talented musicians and introduced each of us to a different instrument so I guess this here was all planned out from the start. Ross:I’m 29, Dan here is 26 and John’s 24, we started this little group for a laugh 2 years ago now but never really wanted to do anything with it until now, and luckily built a small audience within North London in a very short space of time, so I gotta say things are looking pretty exciting.

Tell us about the new album and the recording process.

Ross: Oh yes, our first ever album was released a few weeks back and it was surprisingly successful. We knew we had plenty of ideas between us so we just went for it, straight into the studio early in the morning every day and wouldn’t leave until we had a verse, chorus, verse, chorus. We hadn’t ever tried to do anything like that before so it was quite a new experience for all of us.
Dan:Yeah our main hit seems to currently be the song “Rustic rabbits” written by our youngest band member John in the studio one afternoon so well done on that.
John:Oh thanks man. But I just gotta say our boy Roger in the studio is absolutely brilliant and made a lot of very interesting suggestions which really helped our music develop to the best it possibly could.

What do you think about the current indie rock music scene within North London?

John:I think the scene for indie rock currently is looking very vibrant with new talent popping up left, right and centre all the time.
Ross:This is a brilliant time to be in North London when it comes to this genre seeing as it is rising rapidly in popularity, more so than that of Hip-Hop which has been the most popular genre in North London for a while.
Dan:But were actually country boys ourselves and we moved to North London from Yorkshire about 3 years ago, so the London atmosphere is quite new to us really, but we couldn’t be happier because its bloody brilliant.

What advice would you give to musicians just starting out now?

Ross: If I were to give any advice, I would say to become as multifaceted as possible. Don’t just sit around watching TV, watching premiere pro and photoshop tutorials for hours. There is no time to lounge around now so get out there and learn through doing.
Dan: I would say as a lyricist, plan to experience everything, I know I have a long way to go but songs come together so much better when there is real passion in it drawn from real life experiences and inspirations. Your audience can tell and will connect with the music much more as well as just yourself.
John: On a more practical note, make sure you get an education and a job and build your art and audience on the side at the start, don’t just jump in thinking you can make money off music alone because that could be a mistake.

Has musical talent always run in the family?

Dan: Well actually yes, our parents are both musicians and I know our grandparents used to be as well if maybe not so much anymore. John: Mum has always been fantastic on the keyboard and the bass guitar whilst Dad was always the guitarist.
Ross: They both loved to sing and write their own songs so too so their rather inspirational to us as musicians and have really inspired our current style.

How often do you practice?

John: Well at the moment were taking this seriously so we practicing every day you know, we gotta see how far we can make it with what we’re doing in the amazing musical environment that we’ve got presented to us.
Ross: Yeah, we practice at least a few hours every day to make sure our playing is as tight as possible, we’ve got big plans so we can’t be letting are standards drop.
Dan: we just gotta carry on building and improving on what we’re doing. Writing and innovating and again the next day.

What’s been your favourite live performance so far?

Ross: well we were lucky enough to get a slot in at the venue Koko in Camden through a friend of ours.
Dan: We were pretty nervous to be playing in front of a much larger audience than what we’re used to in a much more prestigious north London venue than usual as well but yeah, I definitely gotta say that one.
John: The atmosphere in that the place was amazing and the crowd responded fantastically to our stuff so it was overall pretty great and we hope to do more stuff like that in the near future.

I set up my model in front of a green screen and take a picture on my DSLR. the green screen is there in order to make cutting out my subjects quick and easy in post production on photoshop.

I repeat the process with different poses and props so I can create the effect that there is a band and not just one person when creating my front cover and double page spread

I repeat the process again for more photos

I take a picture of the sunset outside my window which I will use for my double page spread

I take a photo of my main subject using the spotlight mode on an iPhone in order to create the desired spotlight effect without having to do too much editing in post production

one of the photos I took out side of my bedroom window to be used on my front cover graphic

more screen screen band photos using the exact same process

I took pictures of the drums separately in order to organise the positioning of everything better in post production
